LHI also works well for loading negative values -- even trivially small ones (something LA can't do).
LHI is available on many non-zSeries processors and is guaranteed on those implementing the Architectural Level Set (ALS). Besides zSeries processors, that list includes (at a minimum) 9672 processors (G2 or higher) and Multiprise 3000 processors. Many Amdahl and Hitachi processors implement the relative and immediate features as well.
