There are a number of java programs in (e.g.) /usr/lpp/java/J6.0_64/demo. Do any of them have graphic (X11) interaction? Have you run them? Long ago, I asked a similar question, poorly stated, and Steve Comstock replied that he could point his HTTPD at /usr/lpp/java/J6.0_64/demo/applets and run the applets on his browser.
