I started saving copies of particular posts of Gilbert's in 1998 and
have a couple of dozen at hand. I've been re-reading them this
morning. I was always impressed not only by the depth and
application of Gilbert's technical skills, but also by his relaxed
and articulate style, the vehicle that made his contributions so
effective. He made the effort to post generously, effectively, with
sample code or other detail when relevant, got his punctuation right
and was simply a pleasure to read. He never, to my knowledge,
ranted, bad-mouthed or sought to detract from another person. One
post I'd kept, poignant today, was his brief tribute to Rex Widmer on
the occasion of Rex's passing in January 1999. Does any one know how
old Gilbert was?

Graeme

I remember FTP'ing some CBT updates to Gilbert's P/390 in upstate
New York circa 1997. I first heard of Gilbert when Sam wrote an
article about ShowMVS in Technical Support magazine. I, like
others, have used many of his code snippets over the years. He will be missed.
