The "ASCII support" was pretty minimal - affected only the sign nibble on
packed data, AFAIR.
OOPS. It has been so long, I forget the details beyond the existence
of a EBCDIC/ASCII bit in the 360 PSW and I have no memory of the
significance of it being set. Maybe others from that era with better
memories can chime in.
