Since the discussion has turned to experience with automation, perhaps I can
throw in a bit of mine.

When running networking hands-on classes, I needed automation to start
systems up and then switch to different "student environments" as one group
finished their time and another started. With automation in place I could
devote time to the students rather than slavishly following the progress -
or otherwise - of the 5 to 8 MVS systems (depending on the class).

With the NetView facilities of the late 80's all the pieces were in place to
be able to achieve full automation - which included connecting up the
hardware channel addresses to the MVS systems in the underlying VM.

My objective was complete automation for system startup to the point where
students could start to operate their VTAMs - or - the same point, having
closed down the system as far as restarting JES2. The reason for restarting
JES2 was to enable the students to operate with their own JES2 NJE
networking if they wanted to.

This probably doesn't make sense without mentioning that part of the
advanced learning was that student's designed their own networking
exercises.

The complete automation included - why not?- eliminating all unnecessary
console messages. This objective was achieved but perhaps too
comprehensively. My colleagues now complained that nothing appeared to be
happening and how would they know if, indeed, nothing *was* happening,

To meet this new requirement, I created a "flag" system so that each major
task in the progress of the automation, such as the initiation of JES2, was
associated with a retained message which was created when the task was begun
and deleted when the task was complete. When all of VTAM, the network , as
opposed to the automation, NetView, CICS and TSO messages has been deleted,
the system was ready for student work.
