Don't forget about related areas. With a Mainframe background, storage management would easily fit, maybe security (we do do it best after all), and DR (for a reasonable shop size it's easily an FTE (or 2 or 3)), maybe even change management.

If as a system programmer you have experience in setting up the WLM, getting the application programmers to write efficient code, checking the I/O subsystem response time and fixing problems, etc. it could be a natural conversion. Then once you've started on mainframe performance analysis you could move to other platforms and do it across the enterprise.
