I can see 2 for redundancy (although most shops have 1 per sysplex if the
environment is all shared), but why 5?  

It would be a manual effort.  I suppose you could read all the smf data from
all the systems and create something to at least report on master catalog 
changes.   But since the master catalog should basically only have sysres
dsns and required operational dsns for the systems sharing it anyway, it
shouldn't change very often.  

I have a shared environment that is 2 master catalogs and 2 sysplexes
using CA-MII as the integrity manager.   Generally, the only time I need to
make changes in both is when I upgrade the OS.  But those same changes
have to be done to all the different sysplexes / master catalogs.
