IBM has developed, and deployed internally to some employees, including their sales force -- for z-based product demonstration purposes -- the zPDT (System z Personal Development Tool). It is a System z emulator on Intel, suitable for laptop use. Though they claim it's "not ready for prime time", some customers have already seen it in action. Its existence cannot be ignored.
