I have basically turned down any product that is not smp/e maintainable and installable.

You would miss out on some good products, then.
An example:
ZIP/390 is a small work-alike for PKZIP (which is not SMP/E- compatible, IIRC) that is installed in one asm/iebcopy job.

Don't get me going on PKZIP. I have responded to RS about non smp products and like this one it is (IMO) the same as the CBT Tape. At least with the CBT Tape you get source. Their are other products that give you cobol source instead and its up to you to debug. Why spend under $500 for such a product? If you have to debug it. One I saw, read in a list of the catalog and reformatted it and look out if the format changed. I will stick to well supported products. Remember the day of the sysprog is limited, IMO. Support is mandatory at 2AM just like a 2PM, because a product you said to the programmer don't put into production ends up there you can't argue as its too late and you have to support it.
