I use MODE C and TYPE E. Compression allegedly reduces network bytes by a -lot-. 60% if you can believe the messages. YMMV
Note: AFAIK, a FTP like this with any Windows server in the path is likely to have issues. Reason is that Windows often insists on translation even when directed not to.
