Well, it looks like the company that I work for is really going to try to get off of the z. As I understand it, they have reputable people telling them that an iSeries can do the work for about 1/2 the cost. The z software cost is simply outrageous in this day and age. The estimated ROI of the conversion is 2 years. The estimated duration of the conversion is around 1.5 years. Supposedly, we will be retrained. But, given some other happenings in the company (like laying off 200+ people company wide just a couple of weeks ago), I am really unsure of this.
>From speaking with some i people on a forum similar to this one, the i is a really good platform (unlike Wintel!) for a company our size. And one which requires much less technical support. I guess that sometimes choice is bad. The i doesn't have as much choice, so it is simplier to maintain. I hope that I'm wrong, but I've got a bad feeling that this may actually work and be "good". I don't relish looking for a new job unless the new president can work miracles. Oh, to be young again. I'd never again be so foolish as to get hooked on computers. National politics is the only way to go (where else can you vote yourself a raise regardless of your effectiveness?). Yes, I'm cynical and a bit depressed. -- Q: What do theoretical physicists drink beer from? A: Ein Stein. Maranatha!
