Could you use the ACS routines to set the TAPE to a different retention period 
and leave the dasd part alone?

I am sure you can use 
IF ((&DSN = db2_log_dsn ) & (&UNIT=TAPE) ) then MGMTCLAS=   to do something 
like that.  Do you have a storage admin person you can ask?
