FWIW, the samplib member is IEASYMUP (SYMUPDTE was a predecessor not provided with z/OS itself). A different mechanism may replace IEASYMUP at some point.

It does remain the case that it will not let you create a symbol value longer than the symbol name (including its leading "&" and the trailing ".").
