I wouldn't call IBM Personal Communicate a poor product just because it doesn't offer the flexibility with Cut & Paste you want. PCOM is the gold standard for TN3270 emulation and has a wealth of functionality. It does have some annoyances like only very basic Cut & Paste and some customizations such as support for legal but alternate screen geometries only being able to be done by editing the .WS file.
Vista tn3270 http://www.tombrennansoftware.com/ is what I use and provides very flexible cut and paste options geared towards a 3270 power user as well as on the fly support for any allowed screen size. There are many other TN3270 emulators with various strengths. I have never pursued it but raising a requirement with IBM for enhanced functionality in these areas might be useful long term.
