1978? That's half a decade too late for both 24-bit virtual and 3270. My 
recollection is that the 3270 was 1970, the Intel 4004 was 1971 and 24-bit 
virtual addresses were 1972 if you ignored the 360/67, all roughly 
contemporaneous, So if IBM is legacy, so is Intel.
