Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As useful as member aliases are, I find data set aliases more useful. For example, our third party products were usually referred to as product.library or SYS1.product.library, but those were alias entries for product.VnnRnnMnn.library or the SYS1. equivalent. This allows product support without a constant replacement of procedures, and allows fallback simply by recataloging the alias. Also the procedures had a parameter to allow inserting the version level, allowing us to keep service bureau customers with special requirements happy.
