Using pooled data from three large shops I found for index-level usage in 28K cataloged PDSs, PDSEs, and GDGs:
level, percent | histogram 1, 00 | 2, 41 |xxxxxxxx 3, 31 |xxxxxx 4, 24 |xxxxx 5, 05 | These results strongly suggest---They of course stop well short of proving---that five index levels is enough. (Sum of percents is not 100 because of rounding.)
