David [Andrews]: 300K data sets all having six-level DSN values suggests that there is a standard in place that enforces their use, and you have implicitly said what it is.
What this suggests to me is that four levels are enough for your purposes, leaving two available for DATE.TIME values (or, alternatively, that you use schemes that generate many otherwise identical DSNs that you then make unique using DATE.TIME values to do so).
