We use them as the lan for our SAP app servers (Linux guests under z/VM ) to connect to the many DB2s on z/OS. No flooding the external lan with the extreme chattiness of SAP systems.

I think Hipersocket cannot replace CTC connection by having two major node speak over hipersocket rather than CTC.
