Does anyone think that IBM and FLEX will resolve their issues? I know of a company getting ready to get rid of their 800(going to windoze boxes) and I was going to suggest the FLEX solution but with all the problems I can't do it.

I have a procedure available which will load the zVM 5 CP Nucleus and ramdisk into memory and initiate the install process. I have used this procedure to install zVM 5.2 on a zFrame system and I suspect it will work for 5.3, but of course I don't have a copy of that to try yet. So, any PWD customer with Version 7.0.7 of FLEX-ES can (probably) install zVM 5.3 directly from DVD. Note that this is a fairly small 'community'.... - It will only work for PWD customers (since 64 bit support is required for zVM 5 and that is only available to PWD users). - It will only work for Version 7.0.7 and relatively few PWD customers are on that release. Most PWD customers are on Ver 6. And, before you ask, FSI will/can not upgrade Ver 6 PWD users to Ver 7. If you are a PWD customer running FLEX-ES ver 7.0.7, send me an email and I'll send you the procedure for installing zVM from DVD. If you are a PWD customer running FLEX-ES ver 7.0.x (x being something less than '7') contact your reseller about getting a refresh to 7.0.7. Once you get that installed, contact me for the zVM DVD install procedure. Please.. (PLEASE!) don't ask for the procedure or to get your FLEX version upgrade unless you are really going to use it. Getting and installing the upgrade takes time and effort... Mike C. M. We *do* have a deskside 3480/3490 drive, so we can use that if we must. But it's slow and kind of cranky. I was wondering whether it ought to be possible, instead, to do a DVD install. As I understand it, on a real zSeries (do I mean System Z? I get confused) box, all that basically does is start an FTP server on the HMC and then allow the installing VM instance to FTP stuff over. The Flex box has (or can trivially have) an FTP server on it. It would be a whole lot less unpleasant to just mount the DVD (or copy the files off the DVD onto the Flex host) than it would to deal with real magtape. Is this likely to work?
