SERVICE machine is kind of synonymous with a VM userid. Service refers to more of a task that it does rather than an actual machine named "SERVICE". I always considered them to be long running users. For instance, we use DB2, which runs 24/7, hence it is a service that is always running. There might be a technical/official definition, but that's how I've always looked at it. TCPIP might be considered a service machine as well.
