Maybe he doesn't trust you enough yet. I had a horse that would bolt/run away anytime a new rider would get on him at a canter or if asked to jump. Trainers had to tell me what to do because they couldn't ride my horse to show me. I could ride him alone after I had owned him for many years, but he was not one to trust others easily. Even my friend who kept her horse at my barn for years and knew her as long as he knew me gave her a hard time too. Very smart and talented, but also very opinionated. I lost some of Gloi's trust when I took him to a 'natural horse training clinic'. The guy was yelling at me to yank on his face-I have on video him yelling "rip his face off". The next person I went to help for used the 7 games but used too much pressure and told me that Gloi was the most resistant horse she had met. I could see in Gloi's eyes asking "why is she being so rude". Her making him work harder and upping the pressure just made him even more resistant. I went to clicker training and his 'resistance' went away. He so wants to please. He did not want to go out alone, but really I was nervous about taking a new horse out alone. My other horse became unrideable about the time Gloi got here and was only able to go out once with him. I just don't think it's fair to ask a new horse to go somewhere new with a new owner and all alone to boot. I have just been working on riding him around the other horses and we would just ride in the woods or pasture near the other horses and all is well. Now that we have Falki we have two rideable horses so we should be able to hit the trails next spring. Maybe one day I'll be able to ride the trails alone with Falki or Gloi, but if not I'll find something to do with my horses that we both enjoy. I thought that I had to have a horse that I could ride alone like the one I had for 7 years (and had to retire) or I wouldn't be happy, but I'm having fun with my horses and isn't that really all its about. I'll take things as they come. -- Anna Southern Ohio
