I have seen horses open their mouths without a bit - actually even with a neck ring I have seen it once or twice - have never gotten a photo. I've seen it with Icelandics but other breeds as well. I don't see it as the same thing as the photos with the horses with tight nosebands and the reins applying many pounds of pressure to the horse's mouth - which is different than having a light contact on the reins.
