The sound issue got resolved... thanks every one.
Regarding the vim installation, nothing worked. There was no .deb file
in the setup, when I read the readme file, it said something about
makefile I tried what it said but vim did not work.
Alternately, when I changed the sources.list file and gave the command
sudo apt-get update, it said:
Err http://poorvi.cse.iitd.ernet.in jaunty Release.gpg
Could not resolve 'poorvi.cse.iitd.ernet.in'
Err http://poorvi.cse.iitd.ernet.in jaunty/main Translation-en_IN
Could not resolve 'poorvi.cse.iitd.ernet.in'
...........for every line.
then it said:
Reading package lists... Done
W: Failed to fetch
http://poorvi.cse.iitd.ernet.in:80/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/Release.gpg
Could not resolve 'poorvi.cse.iitd.ernet.in'
W: Failed to fetch

Could not resolve 'poorvi.cse.iitd.ernet.in'
................for every line
finally funnily enough:
W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or
old ones used instead.
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
any way, I tried this a few more times then went to the next command,
sudo apt-get install vim, for this it said:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package vim is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package vim has no installation candidate
All the while I was connected to the internet. I have tried installing
from many more packages, but nothing appears to work. Thank you.
PS: did you guess my name from my email id?
