No matter what- i suggest you please start from basics and master
graphics without seeking shortcuts.

To answer your 'anyone do graphics in open gl' - i helped a startup
build tech prototypes for a 3d game engine while in college..

And later when that startup was acquired - i was the lead architect
and later head of the technology team for that 3 d gaming oriented
startup (then a division of a big company )- till mid 2002 when i left
it to start own company.
