Sometime back, I had installed Edubuntu for a home user. It includes
GCompris
http://edubuntu.org/

It may be good to have a platform like this so that schools can easily
upgrade and maintain the installations on their own. There is no pain
in downloading/compiling/installing many extra packages. The Edubuntu
distro, by default might be sufficient. At the end of every academic
year, the school can check for new CD versions and upgrade easily.

Please review the home page and check if this platform might be the
best to start on as a base.
