Sometime back, I had installed Edubuntu for a home user. It includes GCompris http://edubuntu.org/
It may be good to have a platform like this so that schools can easily upgrade and maintain the installations on their own. There is no pain in downloading/compiling/installing many extra packages. The Edubuntu distro, by default might be sufficient. At the end of every academic year, the school can check for new CD versions and upgrade easily.
