Well like Sebin said, you should think about the need for the project.
The project you said need not be an academic project. You can create a
distro in your leisure time for self learning.

Otherwise the project doesn't have any real importance. Instead you can do
something like to make the system more faster and such things. And it shall
not be a mere implementation of an existing project. Something should be
added to it.

LFS - Linux from scratch is a good method of learning the internal of the
Linux Kernel.
