KPrinter (from 3.x.x series) was considered one of the most powerful of its kind, but sadly it has not been updated for 4.x for many reasons (including support for PDF and CUPS in Qt). Atleast, the printer configuration bits of kprinter (i mean CUPS frontend) could be ported and I think that will make a pretty good project.
