Karmic and Linux Mint 8 RC are great operating systems when you are doing a fresh install. Prasad has been installing those and is himself using Linux Mint 8 RC, without any hitch. It feels great to use it. Its strongly recommended for any newbie.
Using applications via wine is not recommended. When we do that we still stick to those applications - defets the whole purpose of FOSS. Use wine only when you cant find a replacement for a common application. All things that a typical home user does ( excluding gaming) can be done easily on a GNU/Linux system with native applications.. why riddle your system with wine and windows software that you dont need ? :) -- aashik "My one purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others." -- Jamie Zawinsky -- "Freedom is the only law".
