i would suggest to do the partitioning with windows partitiioning tool

1. install win 7 to a 80 GB partition(suggested), do not create partitions
for rest of the unallocated space at this point

2. after windows is installed and fully configured(drivers etc)
right click My Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk
Management

at this point u will get a graphical map of you HDD, typically it
should have 2 partitions an 100MB one and your windows
installation partition
not the Disk no on the left side of HDD you have installed typically
it should be 'Disk 0'
3. close disk management tool. In the Start Menu search box area, type *cmd
*and press *CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER*, this will open up an elevated command prompt
4. at this prompt type 'diskpart' you will now be in the console variant of
windows partitioning tool
5. type 'list disk' it will physical disk drives installed
6. assuming u have installed windows to disk 0 enter 'select disk 0' .
substitute 0 with appropriate number if you have installed windows any other
drive.
7. type 'create partition extended' this will create an extended partition
out of whole unallocated space. close diskpart
6. again go back to My Computer (Right Click) > Manage > Storage > Disk
Management
now you will see the extended partition as a light Blue block
assuming you have like 380 GB of extended partition(for a 500GB HDD after
installing win 7) lets create following logical partitions

     200 GB ntfs
     100 GB ntfs
        *4 GB swap *
*        76 GB ext4*
to do so first select light blue block right click and select create
simple volume from the context menu
in the ensuing dialog box enter the size of partition for 200GB
(200x1024MB), press next select drive letter and file system type. do the
same for 100 GB as well

    * take care while create the following next two linux specific
partitions*

follow the above step upto entering the partition size but instead
selecting drive letter select the third option "*Do not assign drive letter
or path*" and press next in the next dialog box select option "*do not
format this volume" *and finish the wizard

close and restart windows. now you try to install ubuntu, while installing
ubuntu at the partitioning stage select custom partition layout and format
and mount the 4gb and 76gb partitions as swap and "*/*" and procced with
installation hopefully this will successful.

PS: instead of installing from graphical installer disk try installing form
text only alternative installer disk of ubuntu from

http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/oneiric/

 http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/oneiric/ubuntu-11.10-alternate-i386.iso
                 for 32bit

 http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/oneiric/ubuntu-11.10-alternate-amd64.iso
             for 64bit

i have better experience with alternative installer(esp in cases where
graphical installer failed to initialize due unsupported graphical chipset
etc) in past but your mileage may vary
