License is very relevant and there a number of articles published which talk about this. Feel free to talk to any major project or FOSS leader, take your pick from Glibc to GNOME, FreeBSD, Mozilla or Apache and you will find that they value their choice of license very heavily. Your examples have merely shown that a license does not guarantee success and I have made no claims to the contrary.
