Hi! My experience with 3G USB Dongles has been this: speed and signal strength totally depend on the location and weather. And you can forget about underground floors - they simply stop working.
So I would suggest you to take a kutti survey in your neighbourhood to find out more about which 3G dongle will be the best for you. And IMO, if you have a GUI way of doing anything on a GNU/Linux machine, it can also be done using CLI. And this applies to 3G modems too.
