Yes. Yesterday, I had 3 of my ~5 year old cousins over in my place, and all of them were so glued to their Apple MP3 players, Galaxy S2s and Android tablets that they actually failed to interact with each other except for exchanging game app titles and downloading them via the app markets. And even though my cousins and almost all of my friends have smart phones they aren't any closer to learning Linux than they would have been without the smart phones.
A Tablet can be a good addition. But please consider better alternatives like GCompris. A pet kitten or puppy can be a really good companion.
