hi,
with the maturing of indian language support in foss, more and more ppl
are using indic in mails. Usually confined to their sigs. For example,
my sig says 'long live Indlinux' in a combination of kannada and tamil.
This renders in different ways depending on your setup.

if you have utf8 enabled and the relevant font it will display properly.
if you have utf8 without the relevant font you will see junk
if your mail client doesnt support utf8 you will see a series of ??????.
Also, if you belong to an endangered species called CLI mailers, there
is a possibility that the indic in the sig would fsck up the formatting
of this mail. In kmail, there is a setting called 'message property'
which can be set either to 'mime compliant quoted printable' or to
'allow 8-bit'. If you set your kmail to the latter, CLI mail readers do
not get confused. They will still only be able to see ??????????, but
they will be able to comfortably read the rest of your mail.
