direct experience:
1. gimp - as good as photoshop. learning curve a little steep, but
once mastered acceptable to a professional
2. blender - learning curve very steep - say 6 months of hard work.
But professional quality
3. inkscape - comparing inkscape to corel draw or adobe illustrator
is like comparing a cycle rickshaw to a jet fighter. No professional
will touch it - to be avoided
4. scribus - same as above re comparison the pagemaker or quark express

I dont have personal experience with any other multimedia tools
