Over the last two months I have had terrible time with HP service in Delhi
and am tempted to warn against going for HP. I have had two HP/Compaq
laptops so far and my experience has been that they are not tough machines.
The likelihood of breakdown is high after the first year. If the machine
carries a standard one year warranty, the repair costs can be absurdly high.

In particular, after the recent reorganisation of their service system, it
sucks. The whole thing is not subcontracted to various companies all over
Delhi. The service centre in South Delhi (Okhla II) is manned by a company
called RT. My laptop had a problem with the display and the keyboard. In
June they told me that the motherboard was faulty and replaced it for Rs.
12K with a warranty of 3 months. After about two months, the same problem
happened again, and now I am told the display panel is gone. It beats me how
on earth could the keyboard be affected if the panel is gone. But then there
is no arguing with these fellows.

Last time I kept wondering if they changed the motherboard at all. There was
no way of verifying it. It certainly felt like they charged me 12K and just
tightened some loose connections.

I have had to basically give up on the machine which leaves me in the same
boat as Raj and Shankarshan - looking out for a new laptop. Except that, no
HP for me. Have had enough with them.

Also, I would like a smaller sized machine. I am considering a Dell Vostro
1200 or perhaps even an Acer Aspire One. I have sent a separate mail on Acer
Aspire One.
