Hey Keith,
Yeh, the Beck is a good disc. However, I think probably my favorite
rececnt album and perhaps one of the best recordings of the past 15 years is
Rufus Wainwright's "Poses". The guy's a great musician and an incredidible
songwriter. I strongly recomend a listen, but with one cautionary note for
some people. He's openly gay and his songs of love are very often clearly
from that perspective. As long as that doesn't bother you, and it doesn't
me(although I've gotten strange looks from friends as they've heard me
singing his songs to myself), it's a great cd that just grows better with
each listening. There are 2 versions available. The 2nd issue has his
cover of John Lennon's "Across the Universe" (originally issued on the "I Am
Sam" soundtrack) added as a bonus track toward the end of the cd.
On a more eclectic note I've recently discovered a singer from Algeria
named Cheb Khaled. He's been around awhile but it's really different stuff.
It's loosely refered to as "Rai" music. It is not well looked upon by the
current fundamentalist goverment in Algeria and most Rai musicians have been
living in exhile in Paris, the U.S., and other parts for the past 5 or so
years. If you've seen the movie "The Fifth Element" they use one of his
songs during the cab chase scene down through the city. It is not, however,
on the Fifth Element soundtrack.
I've been thinking about checking out the Goldfrapp anyway and your
recomondation has just pushed me over the edge. I'll check it out.

Thanks,

John
