If you had it partitioned, you could keep a copy of 8.6 somewhere, but not anywhere near X or 9. The OS X installation package comes with both a 9 CD and an X CD. You must install 9 first if you want to use Classic at all. You *cannot* use 8.6 officially with a computer that has X on it. I would recommend deleting it and installing 9. Sorry. Maybe someone else on the list has successfully pulled off something like this. But you'll get all of the classic functionality you want from 9. The process goes like this: You put in the 9 CD and install 9 (it boots into from the CD). Then, you pop in the X and double-click the installer and follow the instructions. Once everything is installed (and yes, you can put them both on the same partition), you can choose which OS from the Startup Disk control panel (in OS 9) and the Startup Disk Preference Pane (in OS X). But with a Rev. A (I have a Rev. B), the firmware does not support using a keyboard command at startup to choose your disk. You either have to do it within 9 or X, or from a startup CD.
