John gave an excellent elucidation of possible problems and remedies, much
better than I could have. I do have a couple suggestions- maybe John could
tell us if they're good ones or not. I dont have his technical expertise but
I have been using Netscape since it first came out (about 8-9 years?).
Check to see if your plug-ins in Netscape are configured correctly. With
Netscape on, select "preferences" from the menu bar, then on the column on
the left, under Netscape, choose "applications". You'll get a window showing
all the plugins currently set for different file types. If there is a file
type for which you think you have a plugin, but it doesnt show in the window
(or you have one that would be better than the one shown), click in the
window on the file type to highlight it, then click the edit button below.
It will then show another window- it may give you choices you can simply
change, or you can click the "application" button then the "choose" button
and get a window to find the one you want to use. Netscape should have
auto- selected most of these for you, but I found there were a couple I had
that weren't set up. Some apps will work for a number of different file
types so can be listed more than once.
Try going to Netscape's update site. It will check your Netscape files
and recommend files to download to upgrade your plugins (and you can also
download the latest Netscape version from there, 4.79). It will walk you
through it. I got new versions of some Shockwave software and a couple other
plugins I didnt have. You might want to do this before the previous
procedure, as it should properly set up the software it loads. It's at:
http://cgi.netscape.com/cgi-bin/su/intro.cgi.
I would recommend this for others that dont think they have the plugins
for netscape they need, although GENERALLY when you load a site and dont
have the proper plugin, Netscape tells you and gives you the option of
downloading it - if there is one for Macs- sometimes there isn't, as John
said.
Even if this doesnt fix the current frustration it's a good thing to do to
get full function from Netscape. I do have IE now also- after resisting for
years to put it on my macs- but havent used it much so can't offer any
advice on it.
