I already sent this info to Shannon, but I offer it to the list too, just in
case it helps someone else:

Several years ago, we had problems with every one of the all-in-one
education Macs in our school. It must have affected more than just our
school because Apple sent out a separate CD to anyone who called them for
tech help on this issue. The CD had one thing on it, an update to Drive
Setup (it's in your Utilities folder on the hard drive and/or on your
software install disk). Once we ran the Drive Setup update, we never had
another problem with the flashing question mark. Since then I have been a
staunch advocate for periodically updating the hard disk driver. I run it
on all my computers at home and in school after I have installed software
and especially if it has installed items in my System Folder.
My 2, for what it's worth.
Cheers,
John
