My OS X 1.5 and Classic runs very well on my FP iMac with 768 MB.
However Oss 9.2.2, which I need to burn bootable CDs, freezes
beforeshowing extensions. The machine starts up allright but that is
not good enough for my purpose. Question: can I reinstall OS 9.2.2 only,
leaving OS X be?

Yes, but you shouldn't really need to and indeed that may not even solve
your problem. You probably just have an extensions conflict and/or
corruption of extension(s). Boot with the shift key down, for "Extensions
Off" and see if it boots... if so, it's probably just an extensions
problem. Then, you can use the Extensions Manager (an OS 9 control panel)
to weasel out the bad egg. If you hit the Mac Help button (the question
mark) in the Extensions Manager, you'll get a list of relevant
articles...
the important one is "Resolving System Extension Conflicts".

Well Jeremy, I believe you were right. Having wrestled with Extension
Manager years ago I invested in Conflict Catcher which I managed to
install with extensions off. Running CC8 cleaned up OS 9.2.2 and to test
it I started 5X to see if the system would hang again but it did not
disappoint me. Thanks to you, problem solved.

Many thanks, keep up the good work, Andr.
