Oh geez........ how much do you know about economics, really?

"modular replacement" isn't about greed. keep in mind that while you're
still in warranty, Apple has to foot the bill for all repairs, so
they're KEENLY interested in doing service in a manner that's low-cost.

When you're out of warranty, the greatest expense to a repair is labor.
You aren't paying APPLE for labor, you're paying the service provider
who's doing the repair.... Apple isn't seeing a thin penny of that labor
cost.

As well, component level repair is almost always MORE expensive when you
consider labor cost. Personally, if I have to break out a soldering iron
to do something, the labor rate I charge increases. Component level
repair also requires more troubleshooting to isolate the specific
component. So... (more time) * (higher labor rate) = MORE EXPENSIVE.

In one of my many, many past lives, I did TV repair. Not a fun job (in
my opinion), so I didn't stick with it too horribly long. When I started
there, we did component level repairs. I quickly noticed two things: any
job requiring soldering added extra time to the repair and put my
fingers in harm's way, and it increased the time required to do the job.
People complained about the cost of the repairs we were doing. Sure,
this method means that the part only cost $0.45, but all told, labor
rates would sometimes be $300 or so.

So, instead we started doing module level repairs. The parts were more
expensive, to the tune of $50-$100, but I could do them more quickly, to
the tune of only $100 or so in labor. Very rarely was this more
expensive to the customer (I can't think of a single instance).
