I think that the 16 MB they are talking about is probably required by
"Quartz Extreme", the fancy graphics that are new on 10.2.  Macs with lesser
video cards can still run 10.2, they just won't be able to take advantage of
it's new flashy eye candy.

Nope, the only iMacs with upgrade-able VRAM were the original Rev. A iMacs
that shipped with 2 MB but could be brought up to 6, and the early revisions
of iMac that had the "Mezzanine Slot" - you could plug a third party 8MB
Voodoo video card into it, for better gaming performance.
