Hey Jerry, its not the vram thats important, its the card and bus!! According to Apple you must use AGP and the card must be at least a radeon or GForce 2. Thats why the new iBook uses the Radeon mobility with 16Mb of vram, the vram is important up to 16Mb after that you must have the proper graphics card; in fact Quartz extreme is not supported on Macs using PCI graphics, such as the G4(PCI) and the Blue & White G3's even if you have a 32Mb Radeon 7000 installed. However their is a hack to this that will make it work but it is not supported, mainly because the PCI bus does not provide the speed or bandwidth needed. Anyway hope that clears things up a bit.
