You can buy Cat. 5 wire in bulk, the jacks and connectors separately and the need wall plates etc. You'll need a tool to install the connectors but those are not that expensive. I spent a little over $76 dollars to buy the bits and pieces need to wire ethernet under the house to three locations. With the addition of a powered hub, we have a nice home LAN tying 3 Macs and PC together. Nowadays, Airport makes it all easier, but also more expensive. A hard wired ethernet system works just fine.
