<< Hi, I was just wondering what the limits are on AppleCare. I've had this

iMac 350 for a few years with no AppleCare. Can I go now and buy 3 years of

it for the standard price? Or is it too old for them to support now, or do I

have to continue a previous AppleCare policy or something? Also, is there

something that prevents me from waiting until the iMac develops a problem

before getting the AppleCare? I know it sounds like cheating, but Apple's

website doesn't mention that it is not allowed. >>

AppleCare must be purchased within the first year of original ownership of
the machine. Basically, the clock starts ticking once the machine is
registered. So let's say someone buys a Mac, registers it, then decides to
return it or resell it -- the clock does not begin again with the second
owner. It continues from the first one. And you can't get around it by simply
not registering till you're good and ready, because Apple can determine the
age from the model of the machine and the serial number. For instance, some
older model iMacs, even though still available in a store as leftover
inventory, were not eligible for the $19.95 Jaguar update because of the age
of the machine -- based on model and serial number. Anyway, AppleCare has to
be purchased within the first year, and extends for three years from original
purchase. Only. So you can't buy AppleCare on day 364 and then get three
additional years -- the three years includes the first year. And AppleCare
cannot be renewed or extended beyond the three years. One more thing -- for
folks living in Florida, this does not apply. There must be some strange laws
down there, because AppleCare is not available in Florida.
