It used to be about 80% reliable loading CD's and the computer used to regularly 'pause' so I applied the firmware update from Apple's site. It appeared to improve reading for a while and the 'pausing' certainly stopped, but not long after it appeared to stop reading CD's completely. After some playing about with it, I have found it will load Mac OS formatted CD's fine - both commercial and 'home burnt'. However it refuses 100% to load anything else. I have checked in the System extensions folder and all the drivers appear to be installed. Is there anything else to look at before I replace the CD drive ? Apple put out a CD firmware update for slot loading iMacs some time back. This was in addition to the iMac firmware updates. To be honest, I don't recall if the CD firmware update was for a specific model of slotloader, or for all slotloaders. The "readme" on the update will tell you. I found marginal improvement on my 400MHz SE DV slotloader with both updates. I ended up adding an external FireWire CD burner that works like a charm with all discs.
