The restrictions on recordings, etc., usually say "unauthorized duplication prohibited", but the law says I have the right to make copies for my own personal home use, provided I've purchased a legitimate copy. I think it's called something like "Fair Use". Okay - let's try this circumstance: I own a copy of an Lp, for which I am the original owner. My friend on the other side of the country also owns a legitimate copy. The recording is out of print, and not available on CD. I have the equipment and software to clean it up and convert it to an mp3, but he doesn't. He wants to make a CD of it for his own personal use. I send him the converted files, and he makes the CD.
