Whether *I* would think it's "stealing music" or not is really moot. By current copyright law, yes you are stealing music. The CD version is seen legally as a different product and ergo you are legally obligated to buy it if you want it. I'm not making a value judgement on you as a person: I understand perfectly the feeling that once you have bought a record or cd you own that music and don't see the need to purchase it again. But legally, what you bought is a COPY of the music on a medium (8-track, record, cassette, CD, whatever). If you own a record of, let's say, Elvis Costello's "Armed Forces" and want to get the better, remastered CD version, you must pay for it. And pay again if you want the DVD-Audio version. And again if you want the DVD with the music videos. I think you see where I'm going with this. :) One way around this problem that is not (yet!) regulated out of existence is to create a home-burned CD version of your vinyl music by hooking up a turntable to your Mac or PC. As long as you don't sell it, rent it or broadcast/distribute this CD you've made, you're perfectly within your rights to listen to it. For now. :) Again, I'm not saying that people who feel cheated by this system don't have at least SOME bit of merit in their claims, but that's the law as it stands. The way to change the law is to make it's flaws known to those who can change it. The only thing we get by breaking the law further is more and more draconian "solutions" like the DMCA and hard-wired copy protection which hurt ALL consumers, most of all the honest ones. _Chas_ Lee Gomes of the Wall Street Journal, 24-Jan-03 , commenting on Apple's growing arsenal of hardware, OS and software that is clearly superior to anything in the Windows world: "It's like someone forgot to send them the Resistance is Futile memo." -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
