Thanks...I recently bought an OS 10.1 CD to try out X,
but have been nervous about installing it bc of
existing software and peripherals not being able to
work with it ... and bc I have never attempted to
partition a drive before. 

I have just purchased RAM that will take my iMac up to
640mb and I have a 10Gb hard drive so as far as I can
tell at this point, that's enough to support both
Classic and OS X, right? But if anyone knows where I
could find printable instructions for partitioning the
drive, I'd really appreciate it. So far I have only
found system requirments and basic installation
instructions at Apple.com (but I'm still looking, it
may be there somewhere).
